January Gazette!

Hello, Nurse!

Our next seminar is this Saturday and it's coming up fast! Don't miss it! We're down to our last few seats, so please RSVP if you're coming!

Saturday, January 19th • 1:30 p.m.
SVA Theatre • 333 West 23rd Street, NYC

Featuring:
Steve Borne, Supervising Sound Editor
Jan McLaughlin, Sound Mixer

What does it take to get clean, crisp dialogue that can be understood even against the background of a chaotic hospital?

Join Jan McLaughlin and Steve Borne in this special event to see how they do it for Showtime's hit show Nurse Jackie.

Taking a close look at clips from the show, we'll talk about the behind-the-scenes tools, techniques, and workflow processes used to create and finesse the audio of each scene – during both the production and post-production phases.

Afterwards, we'll have some of the equipment used on-hand, so you can get a closer look, demo the tools you're interested in, and ask any questions you may have.

The event is free, but space is limited, so visit here to register today!

  • Cynthia Wade has nabbed her second Academy Award nomination for Mondays at Racine!
  • Nurse Jackie, 30 Rock, and Boardwalk Empire are all up for sound mixing awards from CAS! Respective congrats to Jan McLaughlin, Griffin Richardson, and Frank Stettner!

First Look: MicW

Besides being adorable and easy to set up, MicW's new professional microphones for iDevices (and other mobile devices) all provide quality sound. All three of the i436 omni, i456 cardioid, and i266 cardioid high sensitivity mics are best for indoor applications. Outdoors, the optional Windjammer helps, but the cardioid high sensitivity i266 clips constantly on a windy day in midtown. If you are obsessed with recording on your iPhone, there is a MicW for you; just beware of dirty connections.

The MicW iShotgun is a great solution for quick portable set up that brought the ambient noise down 5dB from the internal mic on my iPhone. Equipped with a tiny boom-pole & shockmount, T and U mic/headphone splitters, mic cable extensions and a dual mic input splitter/mixer, quick iPhone interviews (or coworker eavesdropping sessions) will sound as good as they look, for once.
